[1000] Jane has 2 candies. Jack has 5 candies. If they
each eat 1 candy, how many candies do they have left in total?
Answer: First we find out how many candies they have together.
5 + 2 = 7. Together, Jane and Jack have 7 candies. If
they each eat one candy, then they ate 2 candies in total. So, we find
out how many candies they have left by subtracting 2 from 7.
7 - 2 = 5. They have 5 candies left in total.
----
[1001] Moe has to go 12 miles to his grandma's house. The
first bus goes 3 miles. The second bus goes 4 miles. How many miles does
Moe have left to go?
Answer: First we find out how far Moe travels on the two
buses.
3 + 4 = 7. The distance Moe travels on the two buses
together is 7 miles. We find out how far he has left to go by
subtracting 7 from 12.
12 - 7 = 5. Moe has 5 miles left to go.

[1008] Joe went back-to-school shopping. He bought 3
binders that cost 2 zorons each, 4 packs of pencil crayons at 3 zorons
each and 5 packs of lined paper at 7 zorons each. How much did he
spend?
Answer:Whether you realize it or not, this is an
order-of-operations problem. You multiply first, then add.
3x2 + 4x3 + 5x7
= 6 + 12 + 35
= 18 + 35
= 53
Joe spent 53 zorons.
----

[1002] What is 3x9 - 2x8?
Answer: We have to remember the order of operations. We
multiply first, then subtract.
3x9 - 2x8
= 27 - 16
= 11
----
[1005] Bob bought a pop for 130 ducats and a bag of chips
for 89 ducats. He gave the clerk 500 ducats. How many ducats should he
get back?
Answer: First we find the total of Bob's purchase.
130 + 89 = 219. To find out how many ducats he should get back, we
subtract 219 from 500.
500 - 219 = 281. Bob should get back 281 ducats.
----
[1012] To convert radons to zurugons, you multiply each
radon by 13 then subtract 51 from the product. How many zurugons are 62
radons?
Answer: This is a really hard problem. First we need the product.
62 x 13 = 806. Then the question says to subtract 51 from the product.
806 - 51 = 755. So, 62 radons is equivalent to 755 zurugons.

----
[1007] What is the remainder when you divide 562 by 9?
Answer: 562 divided by 9 has a quotient of 62 and a remainder
of 4.
----
[1011] What is the quotient when you divide 437 by 11
using long division?
Answer: The quotient is 39. In case you were wondering, the
remainder is 8.

Divide/subtract
[1013] A number is multiplied by 8 and this answer is
added to 99 and the final answer is 171. What is the original
number?
Answer: We find the original number by working backwards.
First we subtract 99 from 171.
171 - 99 = 72. Then we divide 72 by 8.
72 ¸ 8 = 9. The original number is
9.
